Best Cash Back Websites and Apps

See our Free Money page for the best ways to get free money now (sign up bonuses, missing money, and more).

Whenever you’re looking to save money or create some extra breathing room in your budget, one of the first things you should do is look for easy wins. An easy win is something that will take little-to-no effort on your part, will have no negative impact on your life, and still saves you some money.

Of course, there are a lot of different ways you can save money. You can find ideas in my post 101 Practical and Realistic Ways to Save Money and other blog posts from my saving money category.

But the truth is, some methods for saving money will take quite a bit of work or sacrifice on your part. Now, that doesn’t mean that these methods aren’t worth your time or effort, but I would always recommend starting with the easy wins and then moving on from there.

The easy wins will not only help you to start saving money very quickly, but they’ll also give you encouragement and motivation from seeing noticeable results so quickly.

One of my favorite easy wins is to use cash back websites and apps. These websites and apps will pay you for buying things that you need to buy anyway. To make it even better, you can combine them with a good cash rewards credit card or coupons to save even more money (see my article How to Stack Rewards and Cash Back).

In this article I’ll highlight 15 of the best cash back websites and apps that you should consider using. To make the deal even sweeter, many of them give a signup bonus just for joining.

For a long time I didn’t use cash back sites or apps because I didn’t want to be bothered. But within the past few years I’ve made an effort to maximize my credit card rewards (another easy win) and that led me to try cash back sites as well. Once you start using a few of these sites or apps you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how easy it is to get free money this way.

The Best Cash Back Websites and Apps

Now, let’s take a look at the best options available. While the goal of all of these sites/apps is to help you save money, they do not all function in the same way. I’ll try to explain the most important factors about each so you can decide which ones are best for you.

Everyone should be using the top 5 sites and apps listed below. The others listed are also great, but the top 5 will give you great results with minimal effort on your part.

Ebates

Ebates

Ebates is easily my favorite site for cash back, and it’s also probably the most well-known cash back site. You can use the desktop website or the mobile app to earn cash back. All you need to do is go to Ebates first, then click through to one of their partner websites and you’ll earn cash back for your purchase. With thousands of websites/stores in their program, your balance can grow really quickly.

One of my favorite features of Ebates in their browser extension. You can easily and quickly get their cash back button for internet browsers like Chrome and Firebox. As you are browsing the extension will alert you when you’re visiting a site that offers cash back through Ebates. Then, all you need to do is click on the button to activate the cash back. This makes it extremely easy to earn cash back since they are reminding you about it.

Another feature that I love is how Ebates will automatically search to find coupon codes that you can use. When you are going through the checkout process on one of their many partner websites, Ebates will alert you if there is a coupon code than can save you some money. It doesn’t get any easier than that!

As an Ebates member you’ll have access to limited-time offers including discounts and extra cash back. They are always running promotions with different stores and websites, so if you keep your eyes on these offers you can find some great deals.

You’ll also have the opportunity to earn cash back from in-store purchases, although the current number of these offers is much smaller than the offers for online shopping through Ebates

In my opinion, using Ebates is a no-brainer. They make it so easy and effortless to save money, and there are so many great websites and stores in their program. If that’s not enough to convince you, Ebates will also give you a $10 bonus for signing up (to get the bonus you must make a purchase of at least $25 within 90 days).

Ebates has a ton of great websites and stores in their program. I don’t want to list percentages of cash back by site/store because that can change quickly, but through Ebates you can earn cash back for purchases at Amazon, Walmart, Ebay, Macy’s, Expedia, Jet, Staples, Lowe’s, and many others. (Read my Ebates review here.)

Ebates Highlights:

  • $10 sign up bonus
  • Get paid with a check, not gift cards
  • Industry leader
  • Convenient browser extension
  • Automatically finds coupon codes to save you more money
  • Earn cash back for online and in-store purchases
  • Limited-time promos allow you to earn more cash back
  • Sign up for Ebates here to get the $10 bonus

Ibotta

Ibotta

Ibotta is a popular cash back app, but it works much differently than Ebates. You can install Ibotta on your smartphone (use this link to get a $10 sign up bonus) and you’ll be able to browse excellent money-saving offers. You can browse the offers by store or view the hottest offers. You’ll then claim the offers that you want, and you’ll earn cash back after you’ve made the purchase. If you’re making the purchase in store you can use your phone to scan your receipt, or link it to your store loyalty card.

You can also shop online to earn cash back from Ibotta. Simply click through the app to one of their partner websites and it will automatically track your shopping trip and add the cash back to your account.

I’ve been using Ibotta for a while and I love how easy they make it for you. You won’t earn cash back for every purchase like you can with Ebates, but some of the offers allow you to earn a pretty significant amount of cash back. The end result is that both Ebates and Ibotta make it possible to earn really easy money, they just do it in different ways.

Ibotta will give you some great offers where you can earn a few dollars at a time. Last month I got $5 in cash back just for making any purchase on my mobile phone through the app. I just went to Walmart.com and bought a few things that I needed any way. An easy $5!

Ibotta is great for saving money at grocery stores, as there are a lot of offers. You can also use it at stores like department stores like Walmart,  clothing stores, and even for travel booking. I’ve also saved money at Lowe’s a few times with the help of Ibotta.

You can cash out your balance to PayPal, or you can use it for gift cards to your favorite stores and restaurants. Sometimes you’ll get an offer for extra savings if you opt for a gift card from certain retailers or restaurants.

Ibotta highlights:

  • $10 sign up bonus
  • Cash back for in-store and online shopping
  • A lot of offers to choose from
  • Redeem for cash (through PayPal) or gift cards
  • Great for grocery stores, department stores, and more
  • Sign up for Ibotta here to get the $10 bonus

Dosh

Dosh

Sign up for Dosh here

Dosh is another one of my favorites, and I recommend that everyone use this app because it is incredibly easy. There are a few different ways to earn, but the easiest way is to simply link your credit and debit cards to your Dosh account. Whenever you pay with one of your cards at one of their partner stores you will earn cash back. That’s pretty easy!

I recommend everyone to use Dosh because it takes just a minute to create your account and link your cards. And you can start earn cash back right away.

If you sign up through this link, Dosh will give you $5 when you link your first card.

The Dosh app will show you a list of cash back offers from stores and restaurants that are near your current location. Many of these are local places. You won’t find a lot of these stores and restaurants with many other cash back websites or apps. I’m seeing up to 10% cash back offers from stores in my local area.

You can also earn cash back by shopping online through Dosh. This works similarly to Ebates or Ibotta. Just go to Dosh first, click through to the site you want to shop at, and you’ll earn some cash back.

Dosh highlights:

  • Easy cash back by linking your credit can debit cards to the app
  • $5 bonus when you link your first card
  • Earn cash back from local stores and restaurants
  • Use the app to find offers near you
  • Shop online through the app to earn more cash back
  • Sign up for Dosh here to get the $5 bonus

Drop

Drop

Drop is very similar to Dosh, and it’s another app that I recommend to everyone. Just like Dosh, I recommend Drop because it’s so easy. Recently I created a Drop account and linked my credit cards. Then I started getting notifications of points that I had earned. Without even realizing it I shopped at a few stores and restaurants that are in Drop’s program and I earned cash back because I paid with my linked credit card. That’s as easy as it gets.

Drop uses points, and then you trade in those points for gift cards at many different stores and restaurants.

Drop highlights:

  • $1 bonus for signing up
  • Easy cash back by linking your credit can debit cards to the app
  • Redeem your points for gift cards to many different stores/restaurants
  • Sign up for Drop here

Spent

Spent

Spent is the 5th app that I recommend to everyone. Like Dosh and Drop, you can earn cash back by linking your credit or debit card to Spent. Again, it takes just a minute to create your account and link your cards, so there’s no reason not to do it.

Spent also has a travel component where you can earn cash back by booking trips.

Through Spent you can also buy discounted gift cards to some participating stores. The discounts aren’t huge, but you might save 2% by purchasing a gift card.

Spent highlights:

  • Easy cash back by linking your credit can debit cards to the app
  • Find offers near your location through the app
  • Extra savings options on gift cards and travel booking

Some of the offers are for specific grocery store chains and others can be redeemed at any grocery store. The offers change every week, but there is always quite a variety.

One of the nice things about Checkout 51 (and Ibotta also) is that you can use the app in addition to using clipped grocery coupons.

Receipt Hog is a an app that allows you to scan just about any type of receipt. You’ll earn coins for scanning receipts and then you can cash in those coins for cash (through PayPal) or Amazon gift card.

You can also earn coins from playing slots (you’ll earn slot credits through scanning receipts and reaching different levels), and from occasional brief surveys. The surveys will be related to specific purchases that you make.

You won’t earn a ton of cash with Receipt Hog, but the nice thing is that you can use just about any receipt. You don’t have to claim specific offers.

Walmart Savings Catcher

Walmart App

Get the Walmart app here

If you shop at Walmart, and most of us do, Walmart Savings Catcher can be an easy way to save money. It used to be a separate app, but now Savings Catcher is a part of the Walmart app. The app will search for lower prices on the items that you bought. If it finds a lower price you’ll get store credit (through Walmart Pay) for the difference.

I’ve been using the Savings Catcher app for a while. I don’t shop at Walmart a lot, but I’ve already had several receipts that earned some extra money when the app found a lower price. Easy!

Walmart Savings Catcher highlights:

  • Integrates with Walmart Pay
  • The app will look for a lower price
  • If it finds a lower price, you’ll get store credit for the difference
